Ferrous +C Chewable Product Information

Iron is an essential part of our diet – a vital element that supports energy production as well  as cognitive and immune system functions. Iron is essential for healthy blood formation,  oxygen transport throughout the body and cell growth and survival.

Dietary iron from red meats and plant sources undergoes variable absorption – dependent  on the foods and beverages with which they are consumed. Oral iron supplements too are  absorbed variably, dependent on these same factors, and the type or form of iron.

INTRODUCING FERRIC PYROPHOSPHATE

Ferric Pyrophosphate is different. Ferric Pyrophosphate exists as a complex of the ferric  (Fe3+) cation, bound strongly by the pyrophosphate species1. Ferric pyrophosphate iron  replacement preparations contain approximately 12% EI2 and are administered both orally and  intravenously3.

FERRIC PYROPHOSPHATE – BENEFITS

The tightly complexed ferric pyrophosphate iron is a form less soluble in gastric acid4,  and thus is gentle on the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. All forms of dietary iron are  predominantly absorbed while transiting through the duodenum and proximal jejunum, and in  order to be absorbed by the intestinal lumen cells, iron must first be converted from the stable  ferric state to the ferrous state, or be protein bound. This conversion of ferric to ferrous iron  is facilitated by other dietary components such as ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) which act as a  reducing agent(5), enhancing iron absorption.

Being poorly soluble at a low pH, Ferric pyrophosphate has a slower absorption rate while  transiting the intestines, and so poses an exciting therapeutic option with higher iron  bioavailability3.

IS BIOAVAILABILITY IMPORTANT?

Improving bioavailability and absorption of the iron in a supplement helps to minimise  potential gastrointestinal side-effects since unabsorbed iron is the likely cause gut  inflammation and dysbiosis, and enhanced growth of enteropathogens(6).

Iron supplementation with a formulation containing ferric pyrophosphate as an active  ingredient can help maintain healthy iron levels, with a milder gastrointestinal effect(3).
